Frankfurt: test for speed 30 at night on main roads

Gruner’s transport minister pushes through model trial planned back in 2012 but thwarted by the then FDP transport minister

As early as in the fall, Transport Minister Stefan Majer of the Grunen announced the test, which was already planned by the city of Frankfurt in 2012, but was rejected by the then Transport Minister Rentsch (FDP) due to alleged lack of information as a "not approvable" had been prevented. Speed 30 was intended to improve the protection of residents from noise. Rentsch had instead recommended improving passive noise protection, such as installing soundproof windows. While residents were rather disappointed at the time, motorists were more in favor of the rejection.

Now the Minister of Transport and Economic Affairs, Tarek Al-Wazir of the Grunen, has approved the city’s request to introduce 30 km/h speed limits from 22. June and 20. July between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Nibelungenallee, the lower Eschersheimer Landstrabe and in the area of Mainkai/Untermainkai/Schone Aussicht and Lange Strabe near the Heilig-Geist-Krankenhaus. Speed controls are scheduled between July 6 and July 20. and 20 July announced. Already four weeks before there will be speed controls on the routes, however still for speed 50. Residents are still being informed by the traffic department, and intensive public relations work is to take place.

"The threshold values are exceeded significantly, especially on main roads that run through highly dense residential areas", according to transport director Majer. "With the traffic test we want to gain knowledge about what helps the noise-ridden residents of these streets and how effectively speed 30 at night can reduce the larvae pollution for the citizens."

Al-Wazir sees the model test as an important contribution to transport policy: "Reducing the speed limit in urban areas is repeatedly discussed as a means of making traffic safer and reducing noise and exhaust pollution. This is especially true where other means of reducing noise are not possible because of local conditions. What has been missing so far is practical experience of how such restrictions are accepted, what effect they have and what impact they have on traffic flows. I am therefore pleased that the city of Frankfurt can now test the instrument in practice."

After the one month speed limit 30 everything is over again for the time being. How the lower speed limit will affect the main roads and to what extent this will contribute to the reduction of the number of lorries will perhaps only be known at the end of next year. Hessischer Rundfunk reports that the evaluation will take until October 2016.

In Gottingen, despite protests, the nighttime 30 km/h zones introduced last year on some main roads will remain in place. Here, too, it is amed that slower driving reduces traffic alarm and the number of accidents, which is disputed by opponents. In the city council, the head of the department of public order, Siegfried Lieske of the Grunen, was able to assert himself against a petition. CDU and FDP members of parliament think nothing of it: "Now and in the future, the CDU/FDP council group will consistently reject all compulsory measures that want to discourage burghers from driving for ideological reasons."

Will the time come when politicians will dare to introduce a speed limit for highways again??
